Mexican War to Civil War European import, as most of the early ones were, with only a symbol marking on the ricasso. This sword could have seen service by Union or Confederate forces—no way to actually tell. The Model 1840 is known for its tapered grip and flat spine which could cause a cavalryman to break his wrist while using it in the field—the Model 1860 lightened the blade and added a slight swell to the grip, thus changing the angle—and preventing broken bones! The grip and wire is mostly intact but a bit unfurled from age as you can see.
